Census Data: 1860: William is 5 years old. It is speculated that Martha Vanderslice (maiden name unknown) is William's mother. Her age is listed as 28. Based on later census documents, William's lists his mother as being from Ireland so that is the basis of Martha being William's mother. There is also a Mary Vanderslice (age 27) living in the same household which is assumed to be Williams aunt. 1870: William is listed as a student at the Chester Springs Soldiers Orphans School (SOS). It is assumed that William's father was killed in the US Civil War but that can not be verified at this time. 1880: William is listed as a boarder with an occupation as a printer. 1900: William is 44 and Mary is 36. Census information is on 2nd page. 1910: William and Mary are listed on census as well as George Busk, the stepfather of William. William lists his occupation as printer. 1918: <NEW> Newspaper article that William (from Collegeville) provided a quote for during a reunion of the SOS school. Interview states that William arrived around 1867 and stayed for 6 years. The article also mentions he came from Paradise which is near Lancaster. Read Article Notes: 2. William's father is thought to have died in the US Civil War. A list of soldiers can be viewed at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm by searching for Vanderslice. There are 38 Vanderslice soldiers from PA. |
